Life is one big adventure after another isn t it? We ve been on a mission to bring health and wellness to as many people as possible for years through Fitness homesteading 101 and Cave Cooking, and this spring we ve taken it to a whole new level. One of our students (Steven Looi a true entrepreneur with health on his mind) initiated a project in conjunction with the York Region Food Network (food bank) to start an aquaponics project in the area that will bring fresh organic produce to those that need it most. We practically begged to be part of it.

What is Aquaponics? The simplest explanation is that it s a hydroponic grow op! The crop are fresh vegetables and fresh fish. Vegetables are grown in water beds indoors using hydroponic technology including grow lights and temperature control. The water is fertilized by the fish living in large tanks and gravity fed through the grow beds to feed the plants. The plants, in turn, filter the water for the fish. It is then pumped back up into the fish tanks to begin the cycle again. Food can be grown year round and fish can be harvested as they become large enough.
The operation we have become a part of will be capable of producing up to 900 heads of lettuce EVERY MONTH!! Now, they don t just plan on growing lettuce. homesteading This pilot phase will focus on growing leafy greens homesteading of different homesteading varieties. There is also a grow table where Steven will be experimenting with growing other types of vegetables, like tomatoes, tubers and root vegetables etc. As the plants are growing in a floating raft and their roots are spreading out into water, Upstream is starting with varieties that have been proven homesteading to grow very well in a hydroponic environment, but as time marches on they will no doubt be offering much more to the customers of the region s food bank.
We can t tell you how excited we are to be able to take part in this. When you hear of food drives for the food bank, what do they always homesteading ask you to provide? Non-perishable food . YUCK. It s always the can of kidney beans and tin of pumpkin pie filling that have been sitting in the cupboard for a year that you end up chucking in the bin, or things like instant noodles and Spaghettios. Negative nutrition for people who are in great need of it. With Upstream Aquaponics providing 100% of its organic produce directly to the same audience a huge step forward is being made to finally bring nutrition to people who are unable to afford it.
It homesteading s an unfortunate world we live in where only the wealthy can be healthy but as the song says If you don t like what you got, why don t you change it If the world is all screwed up rearrange it RAISE A LITTLE HELL and a few fish to boot.
